A Calgary man has been arrested and charged after allegedly trying to smuggle drugs over the Canada-U.S. border in southern Alberta.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says it seized 108 kilograms of cocaine on March 8 at the Coutts port of entry after a secondary examination of a commercial transport vehicle.
CBSA says the vehicle’s load came from the U.S. and the drugs were hidden in the vehicle.
“Stopping dangerous drugs from coming into Canada is part of the CBSA’s commitment to keeping our communities and our streets safe,” said CBSA Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan District director, Ben Tame. “This significant seizure demonstrates the important work being done by our border services officers as we continue to secure and protect our border alongside our law enforcement partners, the RCMP and the Calgary Police Service.”
Twenty-six-year-old Arshdeep Singh now faces charges of importation of a controlled substance contrary to section to 6(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
He is set to appear in court in May.
