Fluoride is making a comeback in Calgary’s drinking water, but residents will have to wait a little longer.

The City of Calgary says equipment has been installed that will allow for the reintroduction of fluoride into the city’s water supply.

This means Calgarians can expect fluoride to be back towards the end of 2025’s second quarter.

The city says adding fluoride back into the water system required infrastructure upgrades at Calgary’s two water treatment plants.

Upgrades included a retrofit of an existing building at the Glenmore Water Treatment Plan and installing the new fluoride equipment, and the construction of a new building at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant to house the fluoride equipment.

The existing infrastructure had reached the end of its lifecycle it 2011, it adds, and was removed following the council decision to stop fluoridation.

The project is now in the commissioning phase.

Council’s decision to reintroduce fluoride into the drinking water system comes following a plebiscite during the 2021 civic election.

Support for the issue amongst voters rang in at 62 per cent.

Once the city has a confirmed reintroduction date, it says it will provide an update — up to four weeks in advance.

The project has been delayed at least three times. It was first set to be introduced in 2023, but faced roadblocks in the cost of the plants.
