One person is dead after a fiery crash on Crowchild Trail in southwest Calgary that kept a section of the road closed for several hours on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Crowchild at Flanders Avenue SW around 8:30 a.m. for reports of a vehicle on fire.

Police say two vehicles were involved in the crash. Footage from city traffic cameras shows what appeared to be an SUV smashed into a pole on the right side of the road, bursting with flames.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened right next to Bishop Carroll high school. The school says parents were notified and any students who were outside when the crash happened were brought inside.

Northbound Crowchild was closed at 50 Avenue SW for around six hours. The road reopened around 2:30 p.m.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
