It’s no April Fools’ Joke — the consumer carbon tax has officially been axed Tuesday morning, making for less pain at the pumps.
Putting the price of emissions at $0 for Canadians was the first move Prime Minister Mark Carney after being chosen to replace Justin Trudeau last month.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says the tax hasn’t actually been eliminated.
“First of all, Mr. Carney was saying that we need to hike the carbon tax up until a few months ago. So, we know that Liberals have not got rid of the carbon tax, they’ve simply hid it from the gas pumps,” he said at a campaign stop in St. John’s Tuesday. “A few weeks before the election all while keeping the carbon tax law in place that will allow them to raise the tax higher than ever before.”
Early this morning, Gas Buddy reported prices hovering around 141.9 to 149.1 cents per litres.
But, they’re expected to go even lower.
Gas prices are projected to drop by about 18 cents per litre, and 21 cents per litre for diesel.

Gas Buddy experts say it will take about 24 hours for any significant rollback.
Earlier this month, Premier Danielle Smith warned gas stations not to take advantage of the reduction by raising prices, saying they have tools to ensure these savings are passed on to consumers.
She repeated the sentiment Tuesday in a social media post celebrating the end of the tax.
“After years of relentless pressure from [Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre] and provincial conservative governments across the country, the Liberal/NDP coalition in Ottawa has finally scrapped its punishing consumer carbon tax which made Canadians poorer,” Smith said.
“We expect retailers to pass on these savings in full. We are watching and will hold them accountable so Albertans get the tax break they deserve.”
For homeowners, the savings from dropping the 15.25 cents per cubic metre — or about $4 per gigajoule — on natural gas won’t be noticed until the next bill cycle.
The average home using around 10 gigajoules per month will save about $40 on their bill.
Enmax says the change won’t apply to natural gas starting today, but it will appear on upcoming bills once charges made up until March 31 are paid off.
The final Canada Carbon Rebate is to be paid starting April 22 for those who file their 2024 tax returns before Wednesday. For those filing after that date, the rebate will be sent after their returns are assessed.
