Edmonton man charged in global crackdown of major online child sexual exploitation platform

Authorities say an Edmonton man is among dozens of people arrested in the international crackdown of a major online platform for child sexual abuse material.

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit says the 36-year-old southeast Edmonton man is facing charges of possession, access and distribution of child pornography. He was released from custody with conditions and is scheduled in court April 14.

Kidflix, one of the world’s largest online streaming services with child sexual exploitation material, was seized and shut down in an international operation led by Germany authorities and supported by Europol 35 countries around the world.

Nearly 1,400 suspects were identified, and 79 of those were arrested.

“While many people believe they can hide in these corners of the dark web, the online world is not anonymous,” said Det. Erik Bjarnason with ICE. “Law enforcement continues to adapt to the everchanging landscape of online criminal behavior. Successes like this are fuelled by dedicated investigators working with partners around the world to protect the children that have been victimized in the production of this material.”

ICE says it received information from the National Child Exploitation Crime Centre (NCECC) in January that an Edmonton man was allegedly accessing the site.

On March 10, ICE executed a search warrant at a home in southeast Edmonton with help from the Edmonton Police Service. Electronic devices like a smartphone and desktop computer were seized, and police say a full forensic analysis is ongoing.

“Investigations of this magnitude highlight the global efforts to stop these crimes against children. We’re proud to join our international partners in the ongoing fight against child sexual exploitation,” said Acting Insp. Mark Auger with ICE.

The investigation remains ongoing.
