A black bear spotted wandering through parts of southwest Calgary this week, has prompted a response from Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services.

Wildlife officials are working to relocate a bear after multiple sightings in southwest Calgary earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES) got a report of a black bear on the southern edge of the Glenmore Reservoir and then received a second report around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening about a black bear that was spotted near a green space on Palliser Drive in the community of Oakridge.

FWES has setup a trap in the area near the most recent sighting spot in efforts to safely relocate the bear.

The province is out with the following tips for residents who encounter a bear:

    • Do not run. This can trigger a chase response. Make yourself appear larger by standing tall and waving your arms.
    • Back away slowly. Retreat without turning your back on the animal. Always move away calmly and steadily.
    • Make noise by clapping your hands, shouting or using an airhorn. Loud noises can often scare wildlife away.
    • Avoid cornering the animal. Make sure the animal has an escape route.
    • If the animal is acting aggressively or poses a threat to public safety, immediately contact Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services at their 24-hour line: 1-800-642-3800.
