A woman has been charged with manslaughter after the death of a security guard at a downtown Calgary apartment building.

Police say on March 13, staff arriving for their shift at the building along 7 Avenue SW found a security guard who appeared to be in medical distress.

The staff who found him then called EMS and the 73-year-old victim was taken to hospital in serious condition.

He was pronounced dead in hospital the next day. The victim has since been identified as George Fernandez.

After looking over CCTV footage, officials believe a woman entered the building earlier that morning to take packages that were left in the lobby.

Police say the footage showed the woman pushing Fernandez, who was trying to stop her, and he hit his head on the ground.

Officers say she then stole a laptop and other items from an office area.

A photo of the woman from the security footage was given to District 1 officers, and she was found and taken into custody a short time later.

Officers charged Amanda Robyn Ahenakew, 45, with manslaughter. She is expected to appear in court on April 16.

According to a GoFundMe set up by Fernandez’s family to cover funeral and memorial costs, he was a single father with a 15-year-old daughter, and a military veteran in the Philippines.

Police say a preliminary autopsy was completed on March 17, but ongoing additional tests are required.
