A Calgary dentist has been charged for the second time in a year-and-a-half for allegedly submitting fraudulent dental insurance claims.

Calgary police say they worked with an internal investigator from an insurance company and reviewed hundreds of claims between January 2013 and January 2023.

Police say a dentist from All About Family Dental, near Elbow Drive and 75 Avenue SW, filed billings for endodontic, restoration, and extraction procedures. Investigators have confirmed five patients information was used to submit false claims to a provider that resulted in nearly $30,000 in losses.

Calgary resident Alena Vladimiro Smadych, 55, has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

Smadych was previously charged in November 2023 for allegedly submitting nearly $100,000 worth of false claims to a separate provider.

    The investigation is ongoing.
