Snowfall expected in Calgary and areas west of city overnight

The weather that happens around Calgary certainly proves that April showers don’t always bring May flowers.
According to multiple snowfall models, rainfall in Calgary Sunday will likely turn into a dozen centimetres of snowfall in the evening and into Monday.
660 NewsRadio Meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says a large system will begin forming across the Rockies late Sunday, which will start as rain and possibly thundershowers for Calgarians.
However, that’s expected to turn into snow, resulting in plenty falling in Calgary, including areas west of the city.
“Most [snowfall models] in fact, are putting us over 10 cm of snow, with some west of the city calling for 10-15 and up to 20 cm of snow,” he explained.
“With this, we can expect some widespread snowfall warnings to be issued later this afternoon (Sunday).”
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says there’s a 30 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers Sunday afternoon, and around five cm of snow with “periods of rain changing to periods of snow” in the evening.
Monday’s snowfall is predicted to reach 10 cm and remain steady near 1 C.
Meanwhile, Environment Canada has several snowfall warnings for areas northwest of Calgary, including Rocky View County near Airdrie, Crossfield, and Cochrane as of Sunday.
The warning says the snow will be heavy and wet, and up to 10 cm, with more exceeding that amount on Monday.
The ECCC also says that “confidence is increasing that areas northwest of Calgary will receive a substantial amount of snow,” and is expected to end Monday night.
“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the warning reads.
“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.”
The City of Calgary also jumped ahead and delayed its Deerfoot Spring Cleanup–that would have started Monday–to Tuesday.
