It’s time to turn the promises into action; that’s the message from Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek to Mark Carney, following the Liberal Party’s election victory.
“Housing promises are a good start, but without water, transit, and strong city finances, homes alone not going to be able to deliver the future that Calgarians deserve,” she said.
Calgary is leading the country in building homes, a key campaign issue for Carney.
Calgary councillors are hoping the momentum keeps up.
“Housing is a federal and provincial responsibility and if they’re willing step up and do more in that regards, we’re happy to take their money,” said Coun. Andre Chabot.
He adds that through the election campaign, a lot of priorities for Canadians became clear, as most parties pushed to improve affordability.
Other councillors are taking a more ‘wait-and-see’ approach with Carney’s Liberals.
“I am willing to work with any banner that’s being flown across Canada, we serve the same people,” said Coun. Sonya Sharp.
There’s also a call for the prime minister to take Alberta’s energy sector seriously.
Gondek has asked Carney to sit down with energy producers, both in traditional and renewable sectors, saying now is the time to promote Alberta energy to the world.
“That is something that the federal government should be championing,” the mayor said.
Gondek adds she will likely send a letter to the federal government this week outlining what she hopes Calgary can receive from this new government.
“I would like this government to spend more time in Alberta,” she said.
