Dozens of dogs seized from Calgary residence in animal cruelty investigation

Dozens of small dogs have been seized from a Calgary residence as part of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.

The Calgary Humane Society (CHS) tells CityNews they began investigating after receiving a call on Apr. 21 about animals in distress at a residential property.

Investigators ended up finding 33 small-breed dogs in Environmental distress at the home. The animals were seized by CHS.

Brad Nichols, Director of Enforcement and Vice Executive Director at CHS, says there was a buildup of waste and high ammonia levels found at the property.

“Animals require adequate space, which also means appropriate and clean space,” says Nichols. “When animals are kept in that type of condition, or overcrowded, that creates an offence under the Animal Protection Act.

“You put 33 dogs on one single residential property, you can imagine how that might be problematic.”

The dogs will gradually become available for adoption over the next few weeks after they’ve received any necessary medical attention, according to CHS.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. More details are expected to be released once charges are laid.
