A severe thunderstorm warning for Calgary has ended for Calgary after a storm blew through the city from the west on Tuesday afternoon.
The weather agency downgraded the warning to a thunderstorm watch around 5 p.m., saying conditions are still favourable for the development of storms that may be capable of “producing strong wind gusts and large hail.”
The warning remains in place for areas east of the city as meteorologists continue to track a storm moving east.
Most of the rest of Southern Alberta remains under a severe thunderstorm watch.
Big rainfall expected later this week
Calgary could be in for massive rainfall later in the week.
Environment Canada meteorologist Christy Climenhaga says around a 100 millimetres could fall Friday or Saturday.
“At this point we are still a little ways out, so things can change,” she says. “But, our models are pulling in the 100 millimetres over 24 hours in the Calgary area.”
The expected rainfall coincides with the anniversary of the 2013 floods. Climenhaga says the city saw 110 millimetres in just over 24 hours 12 years ago.
But, Calgary was not equipped with all the flood mitigation tools it has now. Plus, river levels remain relative low due to consistent drought-like conditions over the last few years.
