What to expect as thousands arrive in Calgary for Rotary International Convention

By CityNews Staff

More than 15,000 delegates representing 120 countries will arrive in Calgary this weekend for the Rotary International Convention.

The world-class event will run at Stampede Park from June 21 to 25.

The event is expected to contribute more than $81 million to the local economy, boosting business for hotels, restaurants, transportation services, local attractions, retailers, and event venues.

The City of Calgary and Tourism Calgary are asking Calgarians to extend their best western hospitality during the convention; whether that’s a friendly smile, a helpful ‘Hello!’ or giving directions to Stampede Park.

“Every interaction is a chance to show why Calgary is known worldwide for its hospitality,” the city says.

Here’s what to expect.

Increased pedestrians downtown

  • Extra time needed at Calgary International Airport and heightened demand for Calgary Transit, rideshare, and taxis
  • Heavier traffic near the airport, downtown core, and along key routes, especially during rush hours

Travel tips for a smooth experience

  • Allow extra travel time from June 20 through June 25
  • Consider biking, walking, or carpooling to reduce congestion
  • Use available tools and resources to plan your trips efficiently

Calgary Transit

  • C-Train service will be increased June 21-25, running every seven minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes off-peak
  • Expect possible crowding during busy times
  • Extra Calgary Transit staff will be on hand downtown to assist and manage crowds

For drivers

  • Drivers are asked to plan their trip ahead of time, using tools like Calgary.ca/PlanYourTrip or the Waze app
  • As always, 660 NewsRadio will provide live, up-to-date traffic reports every 10 minutes on the ones throughout the event. Listen or watch live.

The city adds that for many participants, this will be their first visit to Calgary, and “all eyes will be on us.”

“So, please help us in sharing Calgary’s warm, friendly hospitality and create a memorable experience that will encourage these visitors to return in the future,” it says.
