A hail storm that hit Calgary on the last day of Stampede did almost $100 million worth of damage.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) says the July 13 storm did $92 million in insured damage with around two-thirds of the claims involving hail-damaged vehicles.
The IBC’s Western Canada vice president Aaron Sutherland says insured damage from hailstorm in the province over the last five years is now $6 billion.
He says continued rebuilding on this scale is unsustainable and will end up putting pressure on premiums until more is done to build resilience that prevents hail damage in the first place.
“It’s high-time we started taking these seriously and re-thinking how we do things,” he says. “We cannot continue to put Calgarians in harms way without adequate resilience.”
Sutherland is calling for the city to bring back the Resilient Roofing Rebate Program, mandate the use of hail-resistant roofing and siding for all new construction in high-risk areas such as north Calgary, and improve hail notification services.
The July 13 storm pails in comparison to last year’s summer storm that was the second costliest natural disaster ever with $3.2 billion in insured losses. The total insured damage to vehicles from the August 2024 storm is estimated to be nearly $1 billion.
A report released earlier this year suggested the cost of insured damage caused by severe weather in Canada 2024 hit a record high as it totalled more than $8 billion — easily topping the previous record of $6.2 billion from 2016 when wildfires tore through Fort McMurray.
