The number of cases of E. coli connected to a popular restaurant south of Calgary continue to rise, as the doors to the eatery remain closed.
In an update provided to CityNews, Alberta Health Services (AHS) says as of Thursday, Aug. 14, there have been 107 probable laboratory cases of E. coli.
The last update on the situation from AHS, requested by CityNews, was on Aug. 6. At that time, AHS said there were 68 probable cases of E. coli stemming from the outbreak, which started at the end of July.
The health agency adds that due to ongoing testing and review, the numbers may fluctuate.
In 68 of the presumptive cases, Entamoeba histolytica infection has also been identified. The parasite can also cause liver, lung, and brain damage in extreme cases.
As part of laboratory testing, AHS says other pathogens including norovirus and rotavirus have been identified. However, it has yet to be determined if these pathogens can be linked to this investigation.
“Both norovirus and rotavirus are common viruses associated with gastrointestinal illness,” the health authority explained.
So far, there have been four hospitalizations linked to the illness at the Saskatoon Farm. Three of these people have since been discharged.
The facility remains under a closure order from AHS.
It will be allowed to reopen when it meets all conditions noted in the order.
