Calgary Pride Parade celebrates 35 years of equality and diversity

It was rainbow flags as far as the eye could see in Calgary’s downtown Sunday morning, as the annual pride parade took place.

Calgary Pride is hitting the streets to celebrate the cultural landscape and history of the 2SLGBTQ+ community with the 35th annual Pride Parade on Sunday.

It begins at 11 a.m. and starts on 9 Avenue SE from Studio Bell to 5 Street SW.

While Calgarians are encouraged to head down to take part in the celebrations, roads in the area will be closed until 3 p.m.

Those include 9 Avenue from 8 Street SE in Inglewood to 11 Street SW in the downtown west end until 3 p.m., 8 Street SE to 3 Street SW–including multiple streets in East Village–from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 3 Street SW to 11 Street SW from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Calgary Transit says there are bus detours to accommodate the parade, while the Red Line between Heritage and Victoria Park/Stampede stations remains closed until 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1.

The parade marshals for the 35th parade are Kalyn Macaskill and Stephani Clements from the Calgary Public Teachers’ Local 38 of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, and Nia Delafleu and Tina Que with non-profit Rainbow Elders Calgary.

“This year we are recognizing the incredible local organizations that sew the seeds of inclusion and change in Calgary and surrounding areas,” a notice on the Calgary Pride website reads. “Together, we will flourish while staying true to our roots: centering the joys and struggles facing the Calgary community.”

After the parade concludes, the festivities continue at Prince’s Island Park at 12 p.m., which will have a beer garden and “sober oasis,” food trucks, and performers such as drag artists, DJs, and live bands.

You can find more information about the parade and the festival at Prince’s Island Park on the Calgary Pride website.
