Calgary police looking for witnesses in $10K distraction theft

Calgary police are asking the public for dashcam footage and witnesses after a distraction theft in Sunridge cost a resident $10,000. Micah Quintin reports.

Calgary police are looking for witnesses and dashcam footage in a distraction theft that happened in the city’s northeast earlier this month.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, around 12:30 p.m., police say a man was in his vehicle in the parking lot of PartSource on 32 Street NE, when he was approached by a man and woman he didn’t know.

The man knocked on the victim’s window, prompting him to unlock the vehicle. Immediately after, the woman got into the passenger side of the vehicle and placed a fake gold necklace on the victim.

He protested and told her to leave.

Investigators say the woman removed the victim’s real gold necklace, valued at $10,000, and got out of the vehicle.

After leaving the area, the victim realized his necklace was missing and reported the incident to police.

CCTV footage from the area has been collected in hopes of furthering the investigation.

However, police are also asking anyone who was in the area that witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage of the area between noon and 1 p.m. on the day of the incident, to come forward.

There is only a description of available of the female suspect, according to investigators.

She is described as between 30 and 35 years old with light brown hair. At the time of the incident, she was wearing a long black dress and carrying a grey purse.
