RCMP issues warning over surge in overnight break-ins near Calgary

Mounties are urging residents in communities surrounding Calgary to be vigilant following a recent spike in overnight residential break-ins.

Since late August, the RCMP in Southern Alberta have received multiple reports of homes being broken into between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., while the residents were asleep.

According to investigators, suspects are gaining access through unlocked sliding doors and windows, often cutting screens to slip inside undetected.

Once inside, they target easily accessible items such as purses, small electronics, and vehicle keys. In several cases, vehicles parked in driveways or garages have also been stolen.

RCMP say the investigations are ongoing, but they are taking steps to alert the public and recommend the following safety measures:

  • Install pin locks on sliding doors and ground-level windows to prevent them from being lifted out of their tracks.
  • Keep keys, wallets, and purses out of sight—especially near entry points and windows.
  • Consider installing security cameras and motion-activated or timed lighting.
  • Trim shrubs and hedges below window level to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Use pry guards on doors to reduce the risk of forced entry.
  • Lock garage man doors, fences, and gates.

Anyone with information about these crimes is encouraged to contact their local police. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
