Youth arrested for intentionally crashing vehicle into Alberta high school: RCMP

A youth is facing charges after intentionally crashing a vehicle into an Alberta high school last week, according to police.

RCMP in the town of Hinton say officers responded to Harry Collinge High School around 3 p.m. Friday for reports that a vehicle had crashed into the building.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital for evaluation, while school officials enacted evacuation protocols to ensure the safety of students and staff.

No other injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, the RCMP determined the collision was intentional. The youth driver was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance and mischief over $5,000.

The accused appeared before a justice of the peace and was released on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Hinton on Oct. 15.

“We understand that there has been some concern within the community in relation to this incident,” said Sgt. Mills of the Hinton RCMP Detachment. “We want everyone to know that we are conducting a thorough investigation. Furthermore, the school board has been involved every step of the way and is taking measures to support students, staff, and families affected by this incident.”

RCMP continue to investigate and are working closely with school officials.
