Suspicious package call leads to major drug bust in Cochrane

A routine call to police about a suspicious package has led to a significant drug bust and an arrest warrant in Cochrane.

On Sept. 15, a resident called Cochrane RCMP after discovering a suspicious package outside their home.

Upon examination, officers found the package contained cocaine and fentanyl, prompting an immediate investigation.

The investigation traced the origin of the package to a home in the Heritage Hills community. On Sept. 25, with support from the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), officers executed a search warrant at the residence.

Police seized more than 3.6 kilograms of illicit drugs, valued at over $300,000, along with Canadian cash.

As a result, arrest warrants have been issued for Cody Smith, 36, a Cochrane resident. Smith faces multiple charges, including:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl
  • Possession of cocaine
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
