Calgary daycare placed on probationary licence amid safety concerns

A Calgary child-care centre has been put on probation by the province amid growing safety concerns.

Zebra Crossing Academy, located in the southeast community of Mahogany, has been placed on a probationary licence by Alberta’s Ministry of Education and Childcare following multiple non-compliances with provincial standards.

The probationary status is set to remain in effect until Jan. 23, 2026, with officials set to closely monitor the facility during this period.

In response to significant safety concerns regarding the supervision of younger children, the ministry has also temporarily reduced the centre’s licensed capacity and revoked its authorization to care for children under the age of three. The change affects 82 child-care spaces.

The daycare is mandated to inform all parents about the probationary status and the changes to the program’s capacity.

Families seeking new child-care options are encouraged to contact Child Care Connect toll-free at 1-844-644-5165 or use the province’s Child Care Lookup tool. The same number can be used by anyone wishing to report concerns about a child-care program.
