Trick-or-treating vs. Blue Jays: Albertans face frightening dilemma on Halloween

With Game 6 of the World Series landing squarely on Halloween night, Albertans are facing a spine-tingling choice: candy or baseball?
With the Toronto Blue Jays battling for championship glory, fans across Alberta are weighing whether to stick with tradition and take their kids trick-or-treating—or stay glued to their screens for what could be a historic win.
A CityNews poll conducted before the series began found that 57 per cent of Calgarians planned to participate in Halloween festivities, while Edmonton topped the charts with 63 per cent of residents saying they’d be out collecting candy.
Despite the baseball buzz, it seems many Albertans are determined to keep Halloween alive. Some families are opting for a hybrid approach.
One Calgary father said he still plans to take his daughter trick-or-treating.
“She’ll be back in time to catch the end of it,” he said.
Others are relying on technology to juggle both events.
“Well thankfully I have my phone, so probably both,” said one fan.
Many households are similarly planning to multitask.
“Candy treats for the kids who come to our home, and then still watching the games,” said one resident.
Another added, “We’ll be giving out candy and watching the Jays game. We’ll have a bowl here and the TV on—we’re excited.”
John Wright, CEO of Canada Pulse Insights, predicts a night of distracted parenting.
“I think there’ll be a lot of looking down at phones on that night as opposed to looking where the tricks and treats are coming from,” he said.
Wright also suspects many homes may go dark as fans hunker down to watch the game uninterrupted:
“There’s a good chance there’ll be a lot of dark houses, a lot of doors that won’t be answered.”
Not everyone is trying to balance both.
“Skip it, I think—watch the Blue Jays,” said one fan. Another declared,
“Jays take priority this year,” another declared.
Whether it’s candy or curveballs, Friday promises to be a night of thrills, chills, and maybe even a few home runs.
