Albertans against coal mining in the province’s Rockies are set to gather in Calgary Wednesday to mobilize a fight against what they’re calling bad practice and a government bailout.
The Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) is putting on the event alongside the the Coalition for Responsible Energy, Alberta Beyond Coal and the Clean Up Your Mess campaigns.

The groups say the province is allowing coal mining in the Rockies and bailing out oil and gas companies that aren’t cleaning up their old wells — leaving toxic pollutants leaking near homes and lost acres of farmland due to abandoned infrastructure.
“Then there is the sneaky new plan for coal mining in the Rockies, which will destroy our beautiful landscapes, poison our drinking water, and ruin our farmland,” says the event page. “Energy companies and the Alberta government have rigged the system. They give industry insiders and greedy executives their dream wish list, at the expense of everyday Albertans, and our precious land, air and water.”

The event goes from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Calgary Royal Canadian Legion No. 1 on 7 Avenue SE.
