Banff residents returning home after gas line cut

Residents are returning home after a gas line was accidentally severed during construction in Banff on Wednesday afternoon.

The Banff Fire Department issued the order around 2:30 p.m. for properties on both sides of Otter Street and Grizzly Street, between Wolf and Caribou streets.

No injuries were reported. Officials said the evacuation was ordered out of an abundance of caution.

Power in the affected area was shut off as a safety measure while emergency and utility crews worked to contain the leak. Firefighters went door to door and used the town’s alert system to notify residents, directing them to leave immediately.

The shutdown of the gas service line impacted approximately 200 homes.

The town posted an update after 4:30 p.m. saying the leak has been contained and residents in the impacted area could return home.

“Power is available, but natural gas service remains shut off,” reads the update. “ATCO personnel will visit all affected homes to ensure that service has been restored and gas appliances have been restarted. This may take a couple hours.

Residents are being asked to prepare for having no gas for short period and may stay in the Banff Recreation Centre as long as they want until it closes at 10 p.m.

Updates on the incident will be posted on the town’s website, banff.ca, as they become available.
