Ontario man faces new charges in 2015 Calgary sexual assault case

An Ontario man who is already facing dozens of charges in his home province has now been charged in connection with a sexual assault in Calgary more than a decade ago.

Calgary police say the victim and accused were in a relationship at the time of the incident in January 2015, which involved sexual violence and choking.

The victim came forward in August 2025, prompting an investigation.

As a result, Bryan James Hayward, 37, of Hamilton, Ont., has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of choking with intent. He remains in custody in Hamilton, with his next court appearance not yet scheduled.

The Calgary charges come amid a broader investigation by Hamilton police.

On May 16, 2025, Hayward was arrested and charged with multiple offences related to a sexual assault investigation. Since then, investigators say additional evidence has been uncovered and more victims identified.

On July 3, 2025, Hamilton Police Service laid further charges against Hayward, including:

  • 12 counts of aggravated sexual assault
  • 13 counts of administering a noxious substance
  • 12 counts of administering an overpowering or stupefying drug to overcome resistance
  • 5 counts of voyeurism
  • 5 counts of distributing intimate images without consent
  • 1 count of assault

Police emphasize that in Canada there is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual assault, and encourage victims to come forward regardless of how much time has passed.

Anyone with information about the Calgary incident is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
