2 charged with selling drugs to vulnerable Calgarians near Drop-In Centre

Police have charged two people for suspected drug trafficking near the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

Investigators say it all started in November, when officers became aware of two people believed to be selling drugs on Dermot Baldwin Way SE.

”Targeting vulnerable individuals where they need to access services, especially during cold weather, will not be tolerated,” said District 1 Insp. Jason Bobrowich. “It’s critical that we remain vigilant in protecting those who can’t protect themselves and our communities.”

Police officers with the Gun Violence Enforcement Team (GVET) monitored their activity and on Dec. 9 executed a search warrant at a home on 60 Avenue and Centre Street NW.

During that search, police seized more than $13,000 in drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and Xanax, as well as $22, 530 in cash, a loaded handgun, and two extended, loaded gun magazines.

Twenty-four-year-old Abdilkaafi Ibrahim was arrested at the northwest home and charged with several crimes, including possession of controlled substances for the purposed of trafficking, careless storage of a firearm/prohibited device, breaching a firearms prohibition order, and proceeds of crime over $5,000.

The handgun seized by police was stolen from a local business in June, police say.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

A second person was arrested in connection with the incident on Dec. 10.

Morningstar Moosomin, 21, was taken into custody near the Drop-In Centre.

They are charged with possession of controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, breaching a release order, possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, and two outstanding warrants.

Moosomin is set to appear in court on Tuesday.
