Calgary police say speed, alcohol, and drugs are being investigated as factors after one person was killed in a crash on Deerfoot Trail in the city’s southeast Saturday.
Officers say it happened on the 7900 block of northbound Deerfoot Trail near exit 248 just before 11 p.m.
A man in his 50s, driving a Nissan Altima, was approaching Glenmore Trail SE from northbound Deerfoot Trail in the lane closest to the median.
Once he exited the road, police say the vehicle crashed into a construction barrier, causing the engine to pop out and onto the road.
At the same time, a person driving a Toyota Rav4 was travelling north on Deerfoot Trail and struck the engine.
Upon arrival at the scene, EMS says the Altima driver died on scene, and the other person was taken to Foothills hospital in serious but stable and non-life-threatening condition. Each vehicle had only one occupant.
Investigators say speed, alcohol and drugs are being considered factors in the crash involving the Altima.
All lanes between Glenmore Trail and Blackfoot Trail were closed for several hours. They reopened just before 5 a.m.
