Man killed in self-defence after luring woman to property showing: Calgary police

Calgary police have ruled the deadly altercation on Jan. 9 inside a NW Calgary home a non-culpable homicide.

Police say a fatal altercation inside a northwest Calgary home last week that left a man dead and a woman recovering in hospital was an act of self-defence.

In an update on Tuesday, Calgary police now say the incident has been ruled a non‑culpable homicide, and the man was killed by the woman after he attacked her during a property showing.

“In my experience in the homicide unit, this is easily the most clear-cut case of self-defence that I have ever been involved in,” said CPS acting Staff Sgt. Scott Guterson during the update.

Officers were called to a home on Edgemont Court NW in the community of Edgemont around 4:15 p.m. on Friday, following reports of a violent fight.

When they arrived, they found a man in his 40s in medical distress and a woman in her 30s suffering from injuries.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was taken to hospital in stable condition. A witness at the home was not injured.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday, identified the deceased as 48‑year‑old Shahbaz Ahmed.

Investigators now believe Ahmed lured the woman to the property under the guise of a real estate showing. Guterson says the woman took precautions and arrived at the home with her father, who was the witness inside the home.

Once inside, and once the woman and her father were in separate parts of the home, Ahmed allegedly attacked her without warning.

A struggle followed, during which Ahmed was killed. The woman and her father managed to flee the home and alert neighbours, who called 911.

Following an investigation, detectives concluded the woman acted in self‑defence. No charges will be laid.

Police emphasize that the pair involved in the altercation were not in a domestic relationship but had been in contact before the incident to arrange the property showing. Officers say Ahmed was previously known to police.

Investigators say no further information will be released in order to protect the woman’s privacy.
