Calgary breaks temperature record Wednesday morning

It’s a strange January in Calgary when you can sit and soak in the sun instead of dodging icy sidewalks. Henna Saeed catches up with Calgarians to discuss this record-breaking January warmth.

Temperatures in Calgary Wednesday broke records before most people were even at work for the day.

660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says the mercury hit 12.6 C at 8 a.m., beating the record of 11.2 C from 2004.

As the day goes on, the city is expected to get farther and farther from that record.

The forecasted high for Wednesday is 17 C.

Stanfield says this atypical weather is expected to continue in the coming weeks.

“Normally, the city of Calgary rides the wave and when we enter a ridge of high pressure, the top of that wave, we’re usually near the top. This time around, the top of the wave is in the Northwest Territories which means we have cold air nowhere near us and that’s creating these above seasonal temperatures,” he explains. “When the wave starts to drop again, we’ll remain above seasonal and then right into the next high pressure system, potentially breaking even more records.”

Thursday will feel quite a bit cooler, but still pretty nice for January, with a high of 4 C.

Friday is also supposed to hit a high of 4 C.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s forecast has the high returning to double digits for the weekend — Saturday could hit 13 C.

Temperatures will lower on Sunday to 6 C.

The typical temperature range for this time of year is between -3 C and -15 C.
