Teens charged after pellet‑gun, baseball bat rampage linked to ‘school’ conflict

Five teens have been charged after a series of pellet gun attacks in Northwest Calgary. Rayn Rashid has the details.

A string of dangerous attacks involving pellet guns, baseball bats and widespread property damage is linked to an ongoing “school-related” conflict between two groups of youths, according to Calgary police.

Police have now charged five teenage boys in connection with the escalating series of incidents that unfolded between Jan. 12 and Jan. 14, 2026.

The list of incidents, according to Calgary police, includes:

  • The spree began around 12:40 p.m. on Jan. 12, when people inside a grey vehicle allegedly opened fire with pellet guns on a 2011 Mercedes‑Benz near Coventry Hills Drive and Covehaven Crescent NE, shattering multiple windows.
  • Hours later, a woman living on Sandstone Road NW reported that a rock had been thrown through her vehicle’s driver‑side window. Two front windows of her home were also damaged by pellet fire.
  • The next day, around 12:34 p.m. on Jan. 13, a driver near Covehaven View and Coventry Hills Way NE said a white Audi SUV pulled alongside him. One youth allegedly smashed both passenger‑side windows with a baseball bat while another pointed what appeared to be a handgun before the group fled.
  • Later that afternoon, six youths were seen exiting a white Audi Q7 in the Covebrook Place NE, where they allegedly smashed the front windows of a home using bats and pellet guns.
  • The same day, around 4 p.m., an older beige sedan reportedly stopped outside a home on Bernard Mews NW. The driver and a rear passenger allegedly fired semi‑automatic pellet guns at the home’s front window.
  • The attacks continued into the early hours of Jan. 14. At about 12:30 a.m., 11 pellets were shot through the windows of another Bernard Mews NW home.
  • That evening, a couple driving on Deerfoot Trail reported an older beige sedan speeding aggressively beside them before two loud bangs shattered their passenger‑side windows. A brass pellet was later recovered from their vehicle.
  • Just before 8 p.m., two youth approached a vehicle outside a 7‑Eleven on 4 Street NW, displaying what appeared to be guns before fleeing in a beige sedan. The suspects then allegedly chased the victims’ vehicle through the area, firing multiple rounds. No injuries were reported.

“Pellet guns can be project at very high rates of speed and can cause serious injury,” said CPS Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm, speaking on the violence of the acts. “These youths also used bats to smash windows.”

“We have no idea whether a gun is a 9 millimetre handgun or a pellet replica handgun; they look pretty much the same. That puts everybody, including police, in significant danger.”

Investigators collected security footage and witness statements, eventually identifying several suspects with help from School Resource Officers. Police say the violence appears linked to an ongoing school‑related conflict.

“We believe that there was an ongoing dispute between two groups of youths,” said Chisholm. “After the first incident, the other group retaliated back, and it went back and forth for three days.”

“We’ve charged individuals from both sides of the conflict.”

Two 17‑year‑old boys were arrested on Jan. 15, followed by a third the next day. Two more teens the same age were charged on Wednesday.

The first three are facing assault with a weapon charges, and all five have been charged with mischief to property and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

The accused are scheduled to appear in court in February. Their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police say additional suspects have been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
