Two extreme speeders nabbed on Calgary roads over the weekend

Calgary police say two drivers will be heading to court after officers clocked them at dangerously high speeds on major city routes last weekend.

Traffic officers stopped the first driver last Friday, just before 8 p.m., after spotting a vehicle racing northbound on Stoney Trail at 114 Avenue SE.

Police say the car was travelling 177 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The driver now faces a mandatory court date and the possibility of losing his licence.

Roughly 20 hours later, on Saturday just after 4 p.m., another traffic officer pulled over a driver on 16 Avenue SW near Stoney Trail SW. The vehicle was recorded at 138 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Under Alberta law, anyone caught driving 51 km/h or more over the posted limit must appear in court, and police emphasized that such speeds pose a serious risk to everyone on the road.

In 2025, Calgary saw 38 fatal crashes, the most in more than a decade. Police say 15 of the deadly collision involved speeding.
