An investigation is ongoing following reports students at a Calgary junior high school were using artificial intelligence to create sexualized images of each other before sharing them on social media.
Administration of the Calgary Board of Education’s (CBE) Twelve Mile Coulee School in Tuscany acknowledged the situation to parents in an email sent Wednesday evening.
“School administration has become aware of inappropriate images created using AI that were shared by some students outside of school,” the message read. “The content of the images is both concerning and highly inappropriate.”
The school says that teachers and administration play an important role in creating and maintaining a welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe environment.
“All threats to anyone in our school community are taken seriously and will be fully investigated,” officials add. “Each situation that arises requires an appropriate level of response to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.”
Administration have been working alongside their Calgary Police Service (CPS) School Resource Officer team in response to the issue.
In a statement to CityNews, CPS confirms there is an ongoing investigation and no charges have been laid.
“Respectfully, I ask you to double check your child’s apps, online presence and security settings. At the end of the day, if you own the device and pay for the device, you are responsible for the content and activities of the users of the device,” a school official said.
They also add that inappropriate language, images, or behaviour towards students and staff are not “harmless pranks” and that possible disciplinary actions can be taken both at the school level and by police.
In December, several charges were laid against a Calgary teenager following an investigation by CPS and Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT).
In that case, police allege the 17-year-old boy used AI to sexualize photos of teen girls who attended several different high schools across the city.
The suspect hasn’t been identified, nor has the high school, in order to protect the victims.
