Traffic stop leads to $36K drug seizure, charges against Calgary man

Calgary police have charged a man with drug trafficking offences, after discovering and seizing more than $36,000 in drugs during a traffic stop.

A routine traffic stop turned into a drug bust late last month after a Calgary police officer seized more than $36,000 worth of suspected cocaine and fentanyl from a vehicle.

Police say it happened around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 29, when an officer noticed a 2003 Toyota 4Runner driving with an obscured licence plate.

After pulling the vehicle over, the officer allegedly saw the driver toss an item out the window.

The item, a white shipping bag, was recovered and found to contain 250.6 grams of suspected cocaine, which investigators estimate has a street value of roughly $25,060.

The driver was arrested, and a search of the vehicle uncovered an additional 112.5 grams of suspected fentanyl, valued at around $11,270.

Leslie Ross Szentmiklossy, 50, has been charged with two counts of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.

Police are asking anyone with additional information to call 403‑266‑1234. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
