Suspect sought after Calgary woman loses $12k in bank scam

Calgarians are being warned by police of a sophisticated bank fraud scam after a woman's bank cards were hacked Wednesday.

Calgary police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man linked to a bank‑fraud scheme.

Investigators say the scam began around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when a woman received a phone call that appeared on her caller ID as the Bank of Montreal (BMO).

The caller claimed to be from BMO’s fraud department and told her that her debit and credit cards had been compromised.

Police say the caller had detailed personal information, including the victim’s full name, address and date of birth. The caller persuaded her to reveal her banking PIN, cut up her cards and wait for a courier to retrieve them.

Around 6 p.m., a grey Chevrolet SUV arrived at her home and collected the cards.

At about 8:15 p.m., the woman received a legitimate alert from BMO about a $12,500 transaction at Ace Casino on Blackfoot Trail SE. She contacted the bank to cancel her cards after realizing she had been scammed.

Police have released photos of the suspect, who is described as a man in his mid‑20s, about 5’9″ and 160 lbs., with short black hair and a black beard. He was last seen wearing glasses, a long grey overcoat and black pants.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403‑266‑1234 or contact Crime Stoppers.
