A driver believed to be experiencing a medical emergency in the city’s northeast led to a chain reaction that killed a cyclist in his 60s and injured a pedestrian Saturday, Calgary police said.
It happened at around 1:35 p.m., when a man in his 70s was driving north on Centre Street between 19 and 21 avenues in a 2019 Ford Escape with a woman in her 60s.
Investigators say the driver is believed to have suffered a “medical event,” which caused the Ford to drift onto the curb and strike a cyclist who was also heading north on the same lane.
The driver then continued onto a sidewalk, striking a bus stop sign, and dragging the cyclist before entering back onto the roadway near 20 Avenue.
After steering into the 21 Avenue intersection, the driver struck the back of the passenger side of an occupied Toyota Highlander, which then smacked into a Chevrolet Silverado.
The vehicle continued, hitting a pedestrian — a man in his 60s — and blowing past another stop sign before striking a pole and stopping completely.
Police say the cyclist was declared dead on the scene, while the driver of the Ford was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries, and all other people involved reported either minor or no injuries.
At this time, officers say there’s no evidence that alcohol, drugs or speed led to the crash, but add they are investigating if a medical event was a factor.
