Carbon monoxide call forces evacuation of NE Calgary hotel

More than a 100 guests were evacuated from a hotel in northeast Calgary on Thursday afternoon due to a carbon monoxide call.

Emergency crews were called to the Emerald Hotel & Suites near Sunridge Blvd and Barlow Trail NE just before 2 p.m.

Calgary Fire says crews were initially called to the hotel for a medical incident involving two people found in the basement. Once on scene, crews detected carbon monoxide readings exceeding 300 ppm, a level considered immediately hazardous, prompting a full building evacuation.

Around 120 people were evacuated. Two people were taken to the nearby Peter Lougheed Hospital in stable condition, paramedics said.

With temperatures outside well below freezing, many evacuees gathered in the hotel lobby while awaiting Calgary Transit buses to provide temporary shelter.

A CFD spokesperson tells CityNews the source of the carbon monoxide was a malfunctioning boiler which has been taken out of service.

The other boilers have been turned back on, and fire crews checked every room to confirm it was safe to reenter the hotel.
