The Calgary Police Commission says Katie McLellan will stay at the helm of the city’s police force until the middle of 2028.
She was officially announced as the force’s interim police chief in May 2025 after the abrupt resignation of former chief Mark Neufeld, who left after six years with the force.
McLellan’s most-recent extension before Wednesday’s announcement was until January 2027.
This news comes as the Commission says Calgary faces rising public safety expectations, major budget decisions, and significant advances in recruitment and training initiatives.
“Over the past year, Chief McLellan has led with steadiness, care, and integrity through a demanding and complex period for policing in Calgary,” said Commission chair Amtul Siddiqui. “She has shown heart and humility and has earned the respect and confidence of the people she serves every day. We have heard from employees and the community alike that her leadership has made a meaningful difference, not only in direction and decision-making, but in how people feel heard, respected, and supported.”
Siddiqui adds that McLellan has proven herself during what has essentially been a year-long interview for the job.
“Retaining her allows her to finish the work she has started, and continue to set a strong course for policing in Calgary,” she said.
The chief says she is proud to continue serving Calgary as the head of police, calling the last 12 months challenging and deeply meaningful.
“I am proud of the dedication shown by our sworn and civilian members, and I remain committed to leading the service with integrity, accountability, and a strong focus on community safety,” McLellan said.
As chief, she reports to the Calgary Police Commission under established governance and performance processes.
