Driver clocked at more than double speed limit before failing breath test in NE Calgary

Police say a driver was arrested early Sunday morning after officers stopped a vehicle travelling more than twice the posted speed limit in northeast Calgary.

Calgary police say officers clocked a vehicle travelling 131 km/h on 36 Street NE near McKnight Boulevard around 2:30 a.m.

The posted speed on that stretch of road is 60 km/h.

Police say the driver then failed a roadside breath test and was taken into custody.

The driver’s licence was suspended on the spot, and the vehicle was impounded, according to police. Court proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.

The incident comes as the city continues its “Drive to Zero” campaign, launched by the Calgary Police Service and the City of Calgary in September 2025 following an 11‑year high in pedestrian fatalities.

The initiative aims to eliminate major injuries and deaths on Calgary roads through enforcement, education, and long‑term safety planning.
