Calgary Opera brings ‘The Barber of Seville’ to the Jubilee Auditorium

Calgary Opera is mounting The Barber of Seville, which is largely considered to be one of the greatest comedies of the genre. It tells the story of a love triangle, as a young count tries to find a way to marry a young woman, Rosina, already betrothed to her elder guardian.
Even if you have never seen the opera, you know the music, often used in Looney Tunes and other pop culture.
The role of Rosina is one of the most iconic parts in opera, and for this production it goes to South African mezzo-soprano Siphokazi Molteno in her Calgary Opera debut.
Molteno says audiences often misunderstand the part.
“She’s not a passive heroine,” Molteno says. “She’s very smart and she doesn’t feel pity for herself regardless of her situation.”
It’s Molteno’s third time performing the role, but it doesn’t get old.
“Each and every time I get to discover different things,” she said.
The comedy of the piece comes from a series of tricks and disguises as the young couple work to find a way to be together.
Molteno says that leads to a lot of quick choreography.
“It’s so comic and it’s full of life.”
Calgary Opera says the production will pair Olympic-level singing with comedic brilliance. It is not uncommon for opera singers to train like Olympians.
“I actually treat myself as an athlete,” Molteno says. Daily preparation is essential, even in a role she knows well.
“Each and every day, we work by using the body… the body has to work in order for the voice to come out,” she adds.
The Barber of Seville is often considered a gateway opera, and Molteno says it is fun for the whole family.
“I would recommend young kids as well from the age of nine going upwards,” Molteno said. “It’s a very beautiful show.”
Despite an international career that has taken her to stages around the world, Molteno says her experience in Calgary has stood out.
“It’s such an honour to be here,” she said. “Very great company, very great colleagues, such a lovely environment.”
The Barber of Seville runs at the Jubilee Auditorium April 18, 19, and 24.
