Calgary teen now facing murder charge in death of grandmother

A Calgary teen is now facing a second-degree murder charge in the killing of his grandmother late last month.

Emergency crews were called to a residence in the community of Pineridge in northeast Calgary around 7 p.m. on March 29 for reports of an altercation.

They arrived to find a woman in her 50s in medical distress. She was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition where she later died.

The woman’s 15-year-old grandson was arrested at the scene and initially charged with aggravated assault and mischief to property under $5,000.

In an update Wednesday, police say the assault charge has now been upgraded to second-degree murder.

The accused cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
