Calgary’s Parade of Wonders moves location due to gusting winds

Organizers of the ‘POW, Parade of Wonders’ cancelled the iconic event because of weather concerns, instead, directing everyone to an outdoor party at the BMO plaza and staircase and to the Comic expo, better served inside. Phoenix Phillips reports.

Wind gusting up to 80 km/h on Friday morning forced the cancellation of Calgary’s annual Parade of Wonders, marking an unexpected start to the 2026 Calgary Fan and Entertainment Expo.

The Expo announced on its website that the parade would be rebranded as the “Party of Wonders,” with all festivities moving indoors for safety.

Instead of the traditional downtown procession, spectators and participants were encouraged to gather at the BMO Centre’s Grand Staircase for a dance party beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The event featured a live DJ and appearances by the two honorary party marshals, Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas and Mud Pi, the Dog Mayor of the Culture + Entertainment District. An official opening ceremony followed at 11:15 a.m., including special celebrity guest appearances.

Despite the abrupt change in plans, many fans still arrived in full costume, determined to celebrate with their community. Farkas embraced the moment dressed as Super Mario.

“I thought the guy with the golden wrench who fixes water pipes is probably on the nose for this year,” he joked, referencing Calgary’s ongoing water troubles.

Andrew Moyes, vice-president of Fan Expo HQ, acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the parade’s cancellation but praised the resilience of attendees.

“Considering the circumstances, I’m just thrilled that our fandom community here in Calgary turns up for us no matter what,” he said.

Farkas highlighted the broader significance of the Expo for the city.

“Calgary Expo drives so many jobs, so much investment,” he says. “This is not just a fun place to be. I’m going to be hitting the vendor hall, there are going to be a lot of small businesses to support.”

“It’s going to be a lot of fun over the weekend.”

The Expo runs at the BMO Centre through Sunday and is expected to draw large crowds with major celebrity appearances, including the four hobbits from the original Lord of the Rings films and Star Trek icon William Shatner.

All programming will continue indoors throughout the weekend, safely away from Calgary’s unpredictable spring weather.
