1 hospitalized, 2 cats and dog dies in Thorncliffe fire

One person was sent to hospital, and several pets died after a basement blaze broke out in a northeast neighbourhood in Calgary on Monday.
The Calgary Fire Department received calls about a large blaze just before 3 a.m. on the 5400 block of Centre Street NE in Thorncliff.
Upon arrival, smoke and flames were spotted coming out of the basement.
Acting CFD Battalion Chief Paul Berger says residents were warning each other about the fire because the alarms in the basement weren’t working.
“[Crews] started a quick fire attack, and then the residents alerted one another,” he told 660 NewsRadio.
“Smoke alarms weren’t working in the basement, but one of the residents was able to alert the others to get out of the home.”
Four people were inside — one was rushed to hospital due to smoke inhalation.
“They were lucky that someone noticed it and was able to get those other occupants out,” Berger said.
However, he says two cats and one dog died in the fire, while two dogs and one cat survived.
The fire was extinguished quickly.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause is ongoing.
