For some Calgary families, sports programs can come with barriers — whether it’s registration fees, equipment, or simply getting kids to and from practices.
Now, the City of Calgary says it’s trying to change that with the launch of Sport Hub, a new program bringing free sports programs to Calgarians aged five to 18.
“It’s a bit hard, because sometimes we have to be on waiting lists,” one girl told CityNews Calgary.
“For a lot of kids who aren’t able to register into sports, it gives them an opportunity to be a part of something like everyone should be,” a parent added.
Calgary Wild, Cavalry FC, and Calgary Surge camps will all be conducted by professional athletes and trainers giving kids a unique experience.
“I think it’s very cool to play with professional soccer players because they can teach us things that they know and lessons that they’ve learned,” a child participating in a Wednesday event said.
Wild FC goalkeeper Sarah Keilty-Dilling says she plans to participate in a few camps.
“I think a lot of the girls were probably going to take turns and everyone will have an experience to connect with the kids in Calgary but I’ll definitely be out to a couple for sure,” she said.
These programs aren’t only low-cost but also offer greater access to extracurricular activities in a centralized location, bringing the vibrancy back to downtown.
“We know there’s four quadrants here but downtown is still the central hub where people are coming to,” said Surge president Dylan Howe. “So for us, being able to be a pillar to invite sport programs, our athletes, our coaches, to engage downtown, was a meaningful event for us.”
Registration for the programs is already open, with camps running from June to September.
