‘Brazen act of violence’: Man in critical condition after shooting in Beltline park

Calgary police are out with an update about a brazen daytime shooting that happened in the city's downtown Wednesday afternoon.

A man has critical and life-altering injuries after what police are calling a “brazen” daylight shooting in a downtown park on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called to Connaught Park, near 14 Avenue and 11 Street SW, around 3:55 p.m. for reports of gunfire.

Officers arrived to find a man in his 30s suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, and remains there with life-altering injuries.

Police initially took several people into custody for questioning, but later determined they were not involved and released them.

One suspect is now in custody.

“This was a brazen act of violence in a public space,” says CPS Staff Sgt. Cory Der in a statement. “These are places where people should feel safe walking their dogs and enjoying their community.”

“We recognize how unsettling this is for residents and are committed to holding those responsible accountable.”

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403‑266‑1234 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
