Treaty Chiefs say they are demanding an investigation into Alberta’s premier for possible treason over treaty rights.
The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs from Treaties 6, 7, and 8 unanimously voted on Tuesday to request a formal investigation from the RCMP and the Auditor General into Danielle Smith and members of the UCP.
The assembly is asking the Mounties and the Auditor General to determine whether their actions could constitute treason under the Canadian criminal code.
The resolution comes amid growing concern from First Nations leaders over the Alberta government’s push toward a separation referendum and what they describe as violations of treaty obligations and risks to national sovereignty.
The Chiefs say the RCMP’s historic role in safeguarding First Nations and maintaining peace between First Nations and the Crown must now be upheld through a full investigation.
On Oct. 19, Albertans will vote on whether they want to stay in Canada or start the process to hold a second, binding referendum on quitting the country.
Smith added the question to the fall referendum last month after a court ruling struck down the ‘Stay Free Alberta’ separation petition for failing to consult First Nations. It was a decision the premier called a misinterpretation of the duty to consult and an infringement on democratic rights.
Since the judge’s ruling prevents Elections Alberta from validating signatures or holding a binding referendum until appeals are resolved, Smith said the new question is the only viable way to let Albertans be heard this year.
The UCP has since filed an appeal of the judge’s decision to quash the petition.
Smith has said her party supports Alberta staying in Canada and that she will vote accordingly.
