Severe thunderstorms may happen in Calgary due to favourable conditions, Canada’s weather agency said in a warning Saturday.
Environment Canada says thunderstorms — some potentially being severe — will develop along the Foothills in southern Alberta Saturday afternoon, moving east to the Saskatchewan border by the evening.
The risk is expected to drop by that time.
Environment Canada reminds Calgarians to head indoors when “thunder roars,” noting that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year, and large hail can cause damage and injury.
“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain,” the notice reads.
The high on Saturday is expected to reach 19 C, with a 60 per cent chance of rain and a risk of a thunderstorm. Winds are expected to gust to 40 kilometres an hour.
According to Environment Canada’s forecast, there is a 60 per cent chance of rain with a risk of thunderstorms on Sunday.
