City council considers blanket zoning exemptions

Calgary City Council is mulling over exempting 247 properties from the repeal of blanket rezoning.
The properties would be excluded since they meet the city’s exemption criteria.
Qualifications include properties that received an approved development permit between August 6. 2024 and August 4, 2026 which haven’t been overturned by the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, as well as subdivision applications submitted before April 8, 2026, and rezoned parcels following a successful rezoning application that was submitted after August 6, 2024.
Mayor Jeromy Farkas commented on the review.
“What we ended up seeing was that there were a couple hundred properties mid-way through the process of building townhouses or going through the process of applying through that and for us from procedural fairness standpoint we couldn’t stop those properties that were mid-flight. What today is about, there are a couple hundred properties, we’re discussing what the zoning should be for those properties should be on a going forward basis. So this is about housekeeping.”
Council is also looking at redesignating 41 properties back to what existed prior to blanket rezoning which are deemed ineligible for an exemption.
The repeal of blanket rezoning takes effect on August 4, 2026.
