Bearspaw Water Project Update: city says “significant progress”

The city of Calgary’s drive to have the Bearspaw South Feeder Main replacement project finished by years end is still on track, the city touted Thursday.
In a news release, the city says they’ve installed approximately two kilometres of new steel feeder main across 12 work areas in Bowness, Montgomery and Parkdale, “demonstrating significant progress for the over 6km long replacement project.”
Construction will continue along 34 Ave. NW until the end of year as crews install steel feeder main pipe and complete utility work.
More water restrictions coming
The city says to expect stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation in mid-October for approximately 4 weeks during pipe tie-in connection work.
“No restrictions are anticipated during Shaganappi pump station work unless we experience a spike in water demand due to unusually hot weather in mid-September and no restrictions are required for phase 3, commissioning the pipe.”
Work to connect the feeder main to the water system will be carried out in 3 phases this fall.
Shaganappi pump station work is estimated to begin in mid-September at the Shaganappi pump station to prepare for connection of the new pipe.
Pipe tie-in connections are planned for mid-October and includes open-cut construction.
Feeder main commission is estimated to begin mid-November during which the city will disinfect the pipe, fill it with water and then remove the existing feeder main out of service.
Current construction update
Stage B feeder main construction started in June, adding 40 segments of new steel feeder main along 3 blocks on 34 Ave. NW in Bowness.
“Work is being completed using an open-cut approach, advancing in sections .. with multiple crews active at the same, allowing roads, sidewalks and property access to be restored as construction moves through the area.”
The city adds microtunneling construction on Stage A is also on schedule and should be finished within the next month.
Crews are working on microtunneling and installation of the concrete carrier pipe, which will enclose the new steel feeder main.
