Talks between the city and the Calgary Airport Authority regarding the construction of a tunnel under a yet to be built runway continue.
On April 3rd, Barlow Trial north of 48th Avenue to the airport will be closed to traffic.
McCall Way north of 78th Avenue will also be shutdown.
However an underpass will be built along part of McCall to allow access to some businesses in the area including the head office of Westjet.
Alderman Jim Stevenson tells 660News the cost of the underpass is included in the airport’s 3 year $620 Million dollar runway project.
Robert Palmer with Westjet says while the closure of roads in the area is going to be a major inconvenience, the new runway is needed.
Stevenson says he’s only about 60 per cent confident the city and the airport authority will hammer out a deal before Barlow is closed in less than a month.
But quickly adds he’s still optimistic the airport tunnel project will eventually take off.
In time a ring road linking Barlow and McCall will be established.
