Civic election campaign expenses released

He finished first in the mayoralty race, but when it came to campaign spending Mayor Naheed Nenshi was a distant third.

According to the Calgary Herald, financial records released Friday indicate former Alderman Ric McIver spent nearly $1.1-million dollars in his failed bid to win the mayor’s seat.

Former TV news anchor Barb Higgins, who finished third in the mayoral race, put  660-thousand dollars into her campaign and remains more than 56-thousand-dollars out of pocket.

Both McIver and Higgins spent money on TV advertising, while Nenshi, who spent 404-thousand dollars by comparison, concentrated on the use of social media.

Ward 8’s John Marr spent the most among aldermanic candidates at 252-thousand dollars.  He also has a deficit to pay off, totaling more than 56-thousand dollars.
